 What is the concept of LED??

A light emitting diode or LED is a semiconductor device which can be used as a light source. Semiconductors are made up of semiconducting materials like silicon or germanium.

A diode also called as a PN junction diode, has two terminals, anode (a) and cathode (k), an anode is positive terminal and cathode is negative terminal, which allows electric current pass only in one direction. A semiconductor diode can be compared to a switch or a one-way key.

Aluminium gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInp) alloy is used for obtaining red, yellow and orange lights. Indium gallium nitride (IaGaN) is used for getting blue, green and white lights. White and Blue LEDs are more expensive than other colors. Apart from the above colors, Infra-Red LEDs (also called IREDs-Infra Red Emitting Diodes) and Ultra Violet LEDs are also available. Staring into an UltraViolet LEDs is harmful to the eyes. So these are less preferred.

Very low voltage and current are enough to drive the LED. Voltage range is 1 to 2 volts and so as Current ranges from 5 to 20 million amperes. They are rugged in construction and hence can withstand shock and vibrations for a long period of time. These lights have a lifespan of more than 20 years. These devices do not need any heating and warm up time so as the miniature in size and hence lightweight. These are quickest in terms of responsiveness. The response time is very. It is about 10 nanoseconds only. These lights are very effective in any kind of weather. They do not lose their efficiency as they get old.

Today the most efficient way of LED lighting is with an estimated energy efficiency of 80% to 90% than the conventional light bulbs. This results that around 80% of the electrical energy is converted into light.

LED illumination produces little-infrared light and close to no UV emission. Because of this, these lights are highly suitable for the goods which are sensitive to the UV emissions.

They are much more eco-friendly and free of toxic chemicals. Most of the fluorescent bulbs contain a multitude of material like mercury which is dangerous for the environment, whereas these lights are 100% recyclable. These lights can be turned on and off a number of times. They brighten up immediately when powered on. Also, they can be switched off and on frequently without affecting its lifetime or light emission.
